Biography:
Prominent
Constitutional Law Professor and best-selling
author Gloria J. Browne-Marshall has been selected
to reprise her highly-popular series on race
and the law. The series is appropriately titled
The Browne-Marshall Lecture Series on
Race. Professor Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, J.D./M.A.,
is author of the best-selling Race,
Law, and American Society: 1607 to Present.
Derrick Bell wrote the foreword to this unique
book which tells the story of Race and Criminal
Justice, Voting Rights, Property Rights, Civil
Liberties, the Military, Internationalism, and
Education. Cornel West says Race,
Law, and American Society
is a gem. Author Blanche Wiesen Cook says
Race, Law, and American Society
is “bold and challenging, dramatic, comprehensive,
and galvanizing.” Browne-Marshall is the
2009 recipient of the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Justice
Award for her work with racial justice and women's
equality. She is a member of the bar of the
U.S. Supreme Court.
Browne-Marshall was selected for this coveted
honor due to her expertise on the issues of
U.S. Constitutional Law, Human Rights, and Race
Law. She is the author of “The
U.S. Constitution: Major Cases and Conflicts”
published by Pearson Press and
“The U.S. Constitution: An African-American
Context” published by Law
and Policy Group Press. She is the author of
many essays, articles, and book chapters. The
Browne-Marshall Lecture Series on Race addresses
such topics as: "Race, Law, and Criminal
In-justice;" "The Obama Factor: Race,
Law, and Voting Rights;" “Race, Law,
and Black Women” as well as "Race,
Law and Public Education" and “Race,
Law, and Property Wrongs.” Browne-Marshall’s
dynamic work in criminal justice exposes the
role law played in slavery, Jim Crow
segregation, integration, and the current criminal
in-justice system.
Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is an Associate Professor
of Constitutional Law and Criminal Justice at
John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY).
She teaches Constitutional Law, Race and the
Law, and Evidence. She is also a member of the
Doctoral Faculty of the Criminal Justice Program
at the Graduate Center as well as a member of
the Gender Studies Faculty at John Jay College.
Browne-Marshall is a former Civil Rights attorney
who advocated on behalf of Black children at
Southern Poverty Law Center, Community Legal
Services in Philadelphia, and the NAACP Legal
Defense Fund, Inc.. Gloria J. Browne-Marshall
is the Founder and Director of The Law and Policy
Group, Inc., a "think tank for the community."
The Law and Policy Group, Inc. examines issues
affecting the lives of children, women, and
people of color. The Law and Policy Group, Inc.
produces the national Report on the
Status of Black Women and Girls®
which is the first and only national report
on the state of Black females in America.
Browne-Marshall is an award-winning playwright
of seven plays. “Killing Me
Softly” is a seven character
murder mystery with music, drama, and humor
set in a law firm. Her play “My
Juilliard” is a three character
drama which stunningly reveals how the lives
of three generations of Black female artists
are turned upside down by the devastation of
Alzheimer’s disease. Her plays have been
produced in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia,
Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Louisiana.
She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc. as well as PEN American Center, Dramatists
Guild, Mystery Writers of America, National
Association of Black Journalists, Women’s
City Club, and the National Bar Association.
Browne-Marshall addresses audiences locally,
nationally, and internationally on issues of
racial/ethnic justice and gender equality. She
has provided expert commentary to: Associated
Press, ABC News, The New York Times, Amsterdam
News, Philadelphia Inquirer, WPIX, WNYC, WBAI,
HOT97 and many others.
