Biography:
Michael B. Parlor, an F. B. I. Certified
Police Firearms Instructor, has served as a
police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department
from 1984 through 2008. He has served in various
assignments including basic patrol, division
jails, gang suppression units, joint federal/local
counter-terrorism units, and he was last assigned
to Southeast Division as a patrol supervisor,
fleet vehicle safety coordinator, and the storm/flood
response coordinator. Since 1989 he has assisted
with the training of recruit officers, veteran
officers, reserve officers, and undercover officers
(returning from sensitive assignments), in the
areas of patrol concepts, crimes in-progress,
building searches, vehicle pullovers, FireArms
Training Systems, and the T.A.S.E.R. While assigned
to Training Division, he also served as a technical
advisor for Department films produced, related
to patrol tactics. In addition to authoring
articles related to patrol tactics, he has represented
the Department assisting the Commission on Peace
Officer Standards and Training update curriculum
for the State of California, as well as the
United States Army update the Military Police
Field Manual. He represented the Department
as a consultant for the Calibre Press book Tactics
for Criminal Patrol. During the first two months
of the 2003 United States attack against Iraq
Michael was assigned to the United States Cost
Guard Base-Los Angeles Joint Operations Center,
responsible for ensuring the safety of the harbor
areas of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Prior to becoming a police officer, Michael
served in both the enlisted and officer ranks,
coordinating training related to nuclear, biological
and chemical warfare, mountain and desert warfare,
self-defense tactics, various infantry weapon
systems, water safety coordinator, drug/alcohol
abuse counselor, and counter-terrorism for active
duty as well as reserve United States Marine
Corps personnel. He was one of two infantry
officers selected to help develop tactics to
be utilized by Light Armored Vehicle (LAV-25)
personnel, and he has briefed U.S. and N.A.T.O
officials regarding the tactical application
of less-than-lethal weaponry. He recently retired
holding the rank of Major in the Marine Corps
Reserve, after serving as a Public Affairs Officer
for the West Coast, where he assisted senior
Marine Corps Officers/Staff Non-Commissioned
Officers prepare for interviews conducted by
the news media.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
Secondary Education and an Instructor Credential
in Police Science for California Community Colleges.
He is currently a member of several law enforcement/military
professional organizations including International
Police Association, International Who s Who
of Professionals, International Police Association,
World Affairs Council, Association of Former
Intelligence Officers (presently the Administrator
for its Facebook site), Marine Corps Association,
NRA Rangemasters Association, and the National
Intelligence and Counterintelligence Association.
He has appeared as a guest on numerous radio
talk shows discussing issues related to international
politics and military intelligence. Additionally,
Michael is a frequent contributor to law enforcement-related
magazines / websites regarding tactical issues,
and has been recognized by several magazines
regarding his work with underprivileged children
residing in South Los Angeles.
