Biography:
Tyrone T. Dancy exemplifies the American character and spirit. Tyrone T. Dancy, of Mt Airy, Phila., Pa., is a combat Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism with the “V” for Valor, and the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. He is also a recipient of the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge (CIB).
Tyrone, using his educational benefits as a result of military service, graduated from Pierce College with an Associates Degree in the Arts and Humanities. He went on to LaSalle University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Arts Degree in Sociology as his major, and Psychology as his minor. In the spring of 2005 he applied and was accepted into LaSalle’s Graduate Program in Professional Communication.
He began his career with the State Labor Department of Penna., April, 1977 as a Disabled Veteran’s Outreach Program Specialist. He has provided employment assistance and guidance to thousands of veterans over the period of 25 years. Tyrone was promoted to Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) he served as The Veterans Program Function Supervisor for twelve years. On November 22, 2002 he retired.
Tyrone wrote a bi-weekly column entitled; “On Point” for several years during the early 90’s addressing veteran’s issues in “The Leader”, a community paper in Philadelphia. In April, 1990, Tyrone was presented the prestigious Dean K. Phillips award by the National Veterans Training Institute of the University of Denver, Colorado for his professional leadership and significant contributions in caring enough to “make a difference”. On January 4, 1993, Tyrone received an award from the National Office of Vietnam Veterans of America for his leadership in the passage of legislation for a Veterans Bill of Right in the state of Pennsylvania.
Tyrone is a former chairperson of the Pennsylvania International Association of Personnel in Employment Security (IAPES) Veterans Committee. He was later appointed vice chairperson of the IAPES National Veterans Committee. Tyrone received the highest honor the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security can bestow on a member, “The Award of Merit”, recognizing his service and performance in the field of employment security.
Tyrone was presented with a Senatorial Citation from Senator Allyson Y. Schwartz of Pennsylvania for his leadership on veteran’s issues. The senator congratulated Tyrone T. Dancy on his outstanding work as host& Producer of the Veterans Hour Radio Program aired the first Saturday each month on WDAS-AM 1480 in Philadelphia. For the past 14 years Tyrone disseminated vital information on issues concerning veterans, their dependents, and survivors. He has never missed his hour of broadcast in fourteen years. On November 11th, 2005 Tyrone celebrated his 130th broadcast of the Veterans Hour Radio Magazine. During Tyrone’s time as host and producer he has interviewed Paul Lawrence Vann, author of “Living on Higher Ground”; Dr. Farrah Gray, author of “Reallionaire”; Umar R.Adullah-Johnson, National Expert on School Psychology; Gloria Morrow, Ph.D., author of “Too Broken to be Fixed?”; Mark Tabron, author of “You Are A Winner”; Rene Godefroy, author of “No Condition is Permanent!; Tyrone dedicated each radio program to the men and women in military uniform. Tyrone is a stylish dresser with a pleasant demeanor and a voice similar to James Earl Jones (actor). He has appeared on several local television programs, newspapers, and on National Public Radio (NPR). Tyrone has truly demonstrated to be a brilliant, engaging, and informative speaker.
Tyrone self published a book in 1995, “War Aftermath Depose” that discloses the struggles some veterans have experienced as a result of combat as well as their attempts in handling the Vietnam experience. Tyrone went on to co-produce, “Letters from the Attic”, a play about Black American War veterans and their meritorious and constructive contributions throughout America’s wars.
In June, 1996, Tyrone was selected as “Poet of the Month” by the Philadelphia Tribune’s Poetry Corner. One year prior, he made his public debut as a “poet” at Philadelphia’s “Painted Bride Arts Theater, in which he received a standing ovation.
Tyrone received the Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Medallion presented to him by Rev. Joseph Williams of the Mt Airy Church Of God. A month later Tyrone was awarded the Penna. Dept. Of Labor and Industry Deputate, Workforce Development and Safety “Pride Award”. The prestigious award recognizes Tyrone for his initiative and willingness to serve his clients and the veterans community on and off the job; for putting personal adversity and hardship aside; developed methods that enabled veterans to help themselves improve their self-esteem and become positive members of the community; and for his tireless efforts to assist the veterans in Philadelphia and surrounding counties.
Impact Services Corps of Philadelphia’s Employment and Training, Transitional Housing, Veterans Assistance and Referrals Program Administrators awarded Tyrone T. Dancy with the “Certificate of Merit” for his outstanding and consistent service to and support of their programs assisting veterans to regain self-sufficiency and personal independence.
On July 13th, 2006 Tyrone was nominated and invited to sit on The Board of Control of Veterans for Constitutional Law, Ltd. Dedicated to the improvement of veteran’s benefits and legal parity for all of America’s veterans. During the 11th anniversary of the Congressional Black Caucus Braintrust, Tyrone was presented with the 1999 Congressional Black Caucus Braintrust Award. The award is in recognition of his exemplary national and community service on behalf of the country’s African American veterans.
During a live broadcast on WDAS 1480 AM Tyrone received a beautiful engraved plaque from The Fiends of Midland in grateful appreciation for services rendered as “Keynote Speaker” at a Memorial Day service. Tyrone was the Keynote Speaker at the TRIO Veterans Upward Bound 26th Annual Graduation Ceremony of the University Life Division, of The University of Pennsylvania. Tyrone received a standing ovation by the graduates and audience for his message.

Tyrone’s book “Serving Under Adverse Conditions”( ISBN: 1-4208-7526-4) takes the reader way beyond the comforts of yellow ribbons, The American flag, patriotic bumper stickers and patriotic bows. He Places before the reader, the harsh sobering reality of combat service, and what it is like to receive over 15 wounds, nearly bleeding to death and then being returned to the rigors of military duty. The book clearly discloses the tragic aftermath of war and, it’s disabling sometimes permanent impact on the lives of those who serve. The unflinching tell all reveal disturbing facts about the unsung ebony heroes in our midst, and how America has ignored their valor and steady contribution for centuries. Tyrone also includes a personal messages and proposal to the Bush Administration, the Senate, Congress, The Department of Defense and The Department of Veterans Affairs.
